OS X FTW!!

// March 23rd, 2007 // No Comments » // Tools

A little history first. When I was about eleven or twelve years old I remember riding to the local library. Sure, I liked the books and videos but what I really remember is the Apple IIe they had. They had a half hour time limit on it, but is there was nobody else waiting they would let me play it forever. Ahh, the memories of a text-based Oragon Trail on a green monochrome screen. Years after that we got a PC and my Windows experience started and I really never looked back. I had gained a pretty good knowledge of Windows OSs by the time I went into college for programming. It wasn’t until 2004 or 2005 that I was introduced to OS X in a class I had called Intro to Macs. I had to take this class for a degree I started for video game design and programming. I was pretty impressed at the time, but knew very little about them still. I was still using Windows, and I still am, but I was reading a lot about Apple and the new OS X.

A new chapter.

So about six months ago a friend from work told me that the old G3 blue and whites would run Tiger. So, I looked on eBay just to see what they were going for and I found one that was pretty cheap. I ended up bidding about $20 for is and it was about $30 shipping. Ha, what a great deal! Anyway the machine came with classic on it, and that is just not what I like in an OS. So it took me almost six months to get out there and get a copy of OS X. Now that I have it installed and running with apps. that are very cool like the one I am using to write this post; ecto I am really, really enjoying it! I am even truly considering making it my main computer and I have not used my windows machine in almost two weeks. That is huge considering that I am using a G3 450 MHZ with 384 MB of RAM vs. a Athlon XP 3200 with a GB of RAM. I think the next machine I buy is going to be an Intel Mac, but it will be a long time before I am getting a new computer.

So that’s my switcher story, I hope you like it.

I did do something

Okay so today I did complete something worth talking about.  I did read over this very nice tutorial about CSS pop-out menus.  I was use this at work for a HTML desktop item we use.  I just wish you could get the desktop items to resize instead of using scroll bars.

Moving forward

Wow, two posts in one night!

Okay so I was thinking about this whole moving everything to my server and hosting my own domain thing and realized that it has been a goal of mine that has been simply that for too long.  Now I am not promising anything, but I really should make some sort of progress soon.  I am currently using Windows Server 2003 and it has done the job as a file server thus far.  Well, except for the fact that it’s not a “Genuine” copy and every time I lose power or I have to restart the server I can’t log into it.  I have set it up a few times a couple different ways and it happens each time.  This really don’t bother me since all I do use it for is a file server and I am still able to access and move files to and from the file share via my XP desktop no problem.  I now have a couple of 180 trial keys that I could use if needed.  I just have to do the old wipe the partition and reinstall windows crap again.  The thing is, is that I would really rather use Unix/Linux instead.  As I have read many times over it’s a much better platform for running a web server on.  Also, it is really free as opposed to free if you steal it.  (I feel so ashamed :p)  And I am really taking an interest in IT security and to really learn that I would really need to know how to use Unix/Linux system.  So recently I downloaded Ubuntu and I even installed it on my desktop so I dual boot Windows XP and Ubuntu.  I have to say that I like it and it is pretty friendly for a n00b like myself.  I was able to install the greatest browser ever, Opera.  I had problems with this in the past using Ubuntu, but that was many versions ago.  Also, Opera now offers specific install packages for Ubuntu and it did not in the past, just those general Linux installs and that is the stuff I have problems with.  However, I was able to install the Flash Player plug-in and I had to use the sh command in the terminal.  Woot, progress. (I think)

Hello wordpress!

Okay, I think I will give wordpress a try since I have read so much about it.  Eventually I would like to have this hosted on my own server at my own domain, but I will start here.  If this goes as good as my Blogger blog I will not be writing much at all here as I usually have very little to say and I lack the motivation to keep it current.  In any case if you happened to pass by this blog by mistake I suggest to keep right on moving as it will have nothing to hold anyone’s attention.

P.S Everything prior to this post is from other blogs that I imported over.

Common Firefox extension equivalents in Opera

// August 31st, 2005 // No Comments » // Cool stuff, Tools

Here is a good article I found on digg that could help those Firefox users switch to a really good browser, Opera. LOL!

With the Free Registration key Opera is giving away today, a lot of Firefox users are moaning about the extensions they are missing. This website lists a number of common Firefox extensions and their Opera equivalents (internal or external).

Oh how insecure Blogger is!

I just notices that when I put the link in my last post to my moblog at TextAmerica.com they change the link so it’s directed to http://d3a1i0.blogspot.com/d3a1i0.textamerica.com which is not correct of course. It’s http://d3a1i0.textamerica.com, and they won’t let me change it. I checked the HTML twice and it’s correct, but when I publish it it’s changes to point to the wrong address. C’mon Blogger! It’s not that bad. It’s two different types of blogs even though you now have the ability to post pics from your phone on Blogger. TextAmerica has a totally different look and templates. Not designed to have posts like Blogger.
