Camping Trip

// June 3rd, 2010 // 1 Comment » // Web Development

I was hoping to get another post done before my camping trip this weekend, but I didn’t. It’s started so I will have to finish it up when I get back. In the meantime I’m going to have some good fun. It’s been forever since I’ve been camping.

Me 2 Pro

// January 22nd, 2010 // No Comments » // Web Development

I am currently trying to figure out how I get from me (currently) to Pro. I desire to be the very best at all that I take in, but also realize that goal is not achievable. I am aiming too high; which can be good, but it seems to leave me stuck. I need to take baby steps, but I need instant gratification.

This could be my portfolio.

I would really like to make this site a portfolio of things I can do. Not necasarily this blog part of it, but this site anyway. I have started a few little basic things, but I need to come up with more design ideas and skills to show off. Once I have done that I might just move this blog to a deeper part of the domain and have some other stuff at the front.

Moving forward

Wow, two posts in one night!

Okay so I was thinking about this whole moving everything to my server and hosting my own domain thing and realized that it has been a goal of mine that has been simply that for too long.  Now I am not promising anything, but I really should make some sort of progress soon.  I am currently using Windows Server 2003 and it has done the job as a file server thus far.  Well, except for the fact that it’s not a “Genuine” copy and every time I lose power or I have to restart the server I can’t log into it.  I have set it up a few times a couple different ways and it happens each time.  This really don’t bother me since all I do use it for is a file server and I am still able to access and move files to and from the file share via my XP desktop no problem.  I now have a couple of 180 trial keys that I could use if needed.  I just have to do the old wipe the partition and reinstall windows crap again.  The thing is, is that I would really rather use Unix/Linux instead.  As I have read many times over it’s a much better platform for running a web server on.  Also, it is really free as opposed to free if you steal it.  (I feel so ashamed :p)  And I am really taking an interest in IT security and to really learn that I would really need to know how to use Unix/Linux system.  So recently I downloaded Ubuntu and I even installed it on my desktop so I dual boot Windows XP and Ubuntu.  I have to say that I like it and it is pretty friendly for a n00b like myself.  I was able to install the greatest browser ever, Opera.  I had problems with this in the past using Ubuntu, but that was many versions ago.  Also, Opera now offers specific install packages for Ubuntu and it did not in the past, just those general Linux installs and that is the stuff I have problems with.  However, I was able to install the Flash Player plug-in and I had to use the sh command in the terminal.  Woot, progress. (I think)

Hello wordpress!

Okay, I think I will give wordpress a try since I have read so much about it.  Eventually I would like to have this hosted on my own server at my own domain, but I will start here.  If this goes as good as my Blogger blog I will not be writing much at all here as I usually have very little to say and I lack the motivation to keep it current.  In any case if you happened to pass by this blog by mistake I suggest to keep right on moving as it will have nothing to hold anyone’s attention.

P.S Everything prior to this post is from other blogs that I imported over.

Where am I?

Okay, so I have been lost for some time now. Just wondering around without any idea what way to go and I change direction often. This needs to stop. I am going no where and doing nothing. So I have really been looking into my interests and what I really want to end up doing and it’s not going to be programming as I went to school for. I used to really like it and it still is fun sometimes, but I can’t picture myself writing code for hours a day.

Web programming would still be kind of cool though, I think. Less code and more design, as apposed to application programming. I still like to work with HTML/XHTML and CSS is cool. I have looked into a little JavaScript also. Besides that they have really cool tools like Dreamweaver and Coldfusion to help out with that. Still have not used them much, but would like to know more about them. I got the basics of Dreamweaver down.

So there is that, however, I really like the sound of the security field. I have a friend going to school for it now, and the company I am working for now is going public and they don’t have a real security team. So, I am sure, they will be creating one at some point. I think that with my programming background security would make a really good combination and I would make myself that much more marketable. Problem is, is that I would have to go back to school.

Problems with going back to school:

  1. Time is kind of short already.
  2. I would most likely have to take classes online which is hard for me to get done on time.
  3. More debt

Things that could happen if I do get a security degree:

  1. I would be so 1337!!!
  2. My home network would be much more secure.
  3. Companies will want to hire me.
  4. I could make tons of cash.

Yeah, I should go for it. I know!

OMFG, I never post on this blog.

Wow, this blog does indeed suck. Well I have settled into this job quite nicely IMO, and it has been going well. I think that they will keep me around for a while. I really like the 3rd shift and with kids and my wife working I will need to keep this up for a few years. All in all, life has been pretty good. I think that a lot of the issues with the wifey have been fixed so that they are at least tolerable for both parties (big plus, LOL). The new little one is everything and more then I could have imagined.

Yes, I live in MN

Okay, so I get up for work at 12:00am as usual and I know that the weather is supposed to be bad. So I look out the window reluctantly and it truly is a winter wasteland. Near blizzard conditions and it’s too early for this crap. So after driving on the freeway all the way to work at about 30mph I find out that we have serious issues going on and we are calling people into work. Yes, in this snow storm. Yeah, things have quited down some, but it’s not entirely over. So, in short I don’t think much time is going to be spent on 2nd step again today. However, I did update my adSense links so please feel free to click them as many times as you like :-) .

2nd step…

Well, no progress yet. I guess this is where I get stuck when I try and do this. It has been getting a little busier, and I have been going to sleep earlier then normal. I end up going to about 1pm – 2pm. I would like to have the hours from 11am – 3pm to play WoW as that is one of my many other addictions. *shrugs*

Lots of free time

Since I am getting paid to sit here I feel it is my duty to do something. I am going to take up a project that I had started and ended up getting pushed aside for a while. I am teaching myself how to use Macromedia’s Dreamweaver and CSS. I do know HTML, at least the basics, already. My goal is to put up my own website and host my own blog there. So Dreamweaver is just the tip of the burg really. I have to learn how to be a server admin too, but that is later. First I just want to make a really cool looking blog.
