Q: Scientology A: Anonymous

This is the type of thing I love to see. I respect them, Anonymous, and their efforts. Check out my diggs recently and you will find quite a few digg posts about it and places you can DL the secret dox.

Objective: Security

Okay, so I have really been having a real interest in the IT security field.  Yes, I have shown interest in many things in my life.  Some I have went for and obtained, and others I have lost interest in half way through.  With IT security I am feeling quite inspired to take it up.

  • One, I have always kind of been interested in the security/hacker type stuff I have read about.
  • Two, I have a friend that is going to school for it now and he is doing a great deal of inspiring me on his own.  In addition to giving me lots of his old text books to read and showing me some ideal paths to get into the field.
  • Three, the company that I am working for is just starting their security department and it is a huge focus right now.

So, I really need to get my butt back in school and start at it.  This is a huge task for me since me and my wife are working opposite shifts so we don’t have to pay for daycare (which is outrageously priced.  i.e. I could own another home for the price of daycare, no exaggeration).  I work third shift and my wife works part time second shift.  So there is no time at all to go to any classes.  I am considering on-line classes, but that is kind of scary to my since I am poor at motivating myself to do school work.  And finally, I am not sure if I can afford to go.

Then after I figure all of that out, if I do, I will have to decide where I want to enroll.  I have it narrowed down to two choices.  My friend is going to ITT Tech now and they are one of only a few choices in my area.  The other is UAT because they have a huge focus on security and have a full on-line course.

Anyway, I need to work it out and get it done.  A four year degree would set me up and I don’t think I would have to do much more school then.

EDIT: I just looked back after importing other posts and I already made a post just like this one (almost).

Moving forward

Wow, two posts in one night!

Okay so I was thinking about this whole moving everything to my server and hosting my own domain thing and realized that it has been a goal of mine that has been simply that for too long.  Now I am not promising anything, but I really should make some sort of progress soon.  I am currently using Windows Server 2003 and it has done the job as a file server thus far.  Well, except for the fact that it’s not a “Genuine” copy and every time I lose power or I have to restart the server I can’t log into it.  I have set it up a few times a couple different ways and it happens each time.  This really don’t bother me since all I do use it for is a file server and I am still able to access and move files to and from the file share via my XP desktop no problem.  I now have a couple of 180 trial keys that I could use if needed.  I just have to do the old wipe the partition and reinstall windows crap again.  The thing is, is that I would really rather use Unix/Linux instead.  As I have read many times over it’s a much better platform for running a web server on.  Also, it is really free as opposed to free if you steal it.  (I feel so ashamed :p)  And I am really taking an interest in IT security and to really learn that I would really need to know how to use Unix/Linux system.  So recently I downloaded Ubuntu and I even installed it on my desktop so I dual boot Windows XP and Ubuntu.  I have to say that I like it and it is pretty friendly for a n00b like myself.  I was able to install the greatest browser ever, Opera.  I had problems with this in the past using Ubuntu, but that was many versions ago.  Also, Opera now offers specific install packages for Ubuntu and it did not in the past, just those general Linux installs and that is the stuff I have problems with.  However, I was able to install the Flash Player plug-in and I had to use the sh command in the terminal.  Woot, progress. (I think)

Where am I?

Okay, so I have been lost for some time now. Just wondering around without any idea what way to go and I change direction often. This needs to stop. I am going no where and doing nothing. So I have really been looking into my interests and what I really want to end up doing and it’s not going to be programming as I went to school for. I used to really like it and it still is fun sometimes, but I can’t picture myself writing code for hours a day.

Web programming would still be kind of cool though, I think. Less code and more design, as apposed to application programming. I still like to work with HTML/XHTML and CSS is cool. I have looked into a little JavaScript also. Besides that they have really cool tools like Dreamweaver and Coldfusion to help out with that. Still have not used them much, but would like to know more about them. I got the basics of Dreamweaver down.

So there is that, however, I really like the sound of the security field. I have a friend going to school for it now, and the company I am working for now is going public and they don’t have a real security team. So, I am sure, they will be creating one at some point. I think that with my programming background security would make a really good combination and I would make myself that much more marketable. Problem is, is that I would have to go back to school.

Problems with going back to school:

  1. Time is kind of short already.
  2. I would most likely have to take classes online which is hard for me to get done on time.
  3. More debt

Things that could happen if I do get a security degree:

  1. I would be so 1337!!!
  2. My home network would be much more secure.
  3. Companies will want to hire me.
  4. I could make tons of cash.

Yeah, I should go for it. I know!
